What to expect during your first visit:
If you are considering working with me, you can expect a warm welcome with a comfortable and casual vibe.
I know how hard it can be to start with a new therapist, so I do my best to ensure that the process is as easy and painless for you as possible.
A look at my office:
-
Per legal and licensing board requirements, I'll have you fill out some forms about your rights as a client, confidentiality agreement, and some other intake forms. If you plan to use insurance, I will need you to fill out a form to make sure there are no issues with your insurance provider (as well as make a copy of your card), as well as getting your payment information.
I will also have you read over and sign my professional disclosure statement - it’s just a document to provide info that may be relevant for you to know before deciding to sign up to work with me. And of course, any and all questions are welcome! I will also have an intake form to give me general background info about you and with a symptoms checklist for you to give me a general idea of why you are here.
-
Ever been to a therapist who took the majority of the time asking questions you can just read from the intake forms and barely any time on session content??
Won't happen here!
While I spend the first bit of session just getting to know you, I'll do my best in not wasting your time asking about things that are irrelevant to what brings you here. I pride myself in being able to get the majority of what I need for background info in the shortest time that I can - so that we can use most of our time to focus on your reason for therapy.
No unnecessary or overly intrusive assessments here! After you share with me all info we should know about you for context for your presenting issue, we move to the next step.
-
The majority of this time will be you talking and me listening. Feel free to give me a full, well-thought-out explanation of what brings you to my office, OR you may simply feel like word vomiting all of your concerns. Don't worry about being "all over the place" - I'll do the untanging. But for now, my job is listening and providing validation and support.
After this, using my best clinical judgment, I will give you a general idea of how therapy can help, and what my role will be. There is no promise of a quick fix or complete cure of your symptoms in one session, but I will provide a realistic plan for what we can do in our work together. And for your benefit, I always like to give at least something tangible to take from our session that may help.
NOTE: If I see that your presenting issue is beyond what I can properly provide to serve you, I will be honest and tell you as soon as I become aware.
-
At the end of session, and after giving you a chance for any last questions, I will provide a realistic plan for what we can do, how often you may need to return, and how many sessions you may need. We may also either schedule your next session, or you can give it some time and sleep on it before making a decision.
And if you decide that we are not a good fit, or you are looking for a different approach - no worries! You deserve a counselor you can trust will be able to help, and I understand I cannot be that for everyone.
